Staines murder: CBI nabs wanted accused in M’bhanj

Sunday, 22 September 2019 | PNS | BARIPADA

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) late on Thursday night managed to nab one of the key accused involved in the sensational killing of Australian missionary Graham Staines and his two sons in 1999.

A team of CBI sleuths from Kolkata arrested the accused Budhhadeb Nayak (45) from his house at Nischitapur village under the Thakurmunda police station in Mayurbhanj district. Nayak was one of the close associates of the main accused Dara Singh.

The investigating agency team conducted a raid at Nayak’s house after getting reliable inputs about his presence there. His arrest came to light after he was brought to the Thakurmunda Community Health Centre (CHC) for a health checkup.

Later, Nayak was taken to the Regional Office of the CBI in Bhubaneswar for interrogation.

Staines and his two minor sons had been burnt to death on January 22, 1999 by a Bajrang Dal mob while they were sleeping in their vehicle at Manoharpur village in Keonjhar district.

The infamous incident had drawn international media attention.

While a total of 18 people, including Dara Singh, were arrested for their involvement in the crime, Nayak, who was one of the most wanted in the case, was on the run following the incident.

In 2003, a designated CBI court in Bhubaneswar had sentenced Dara Singh to

death and 12 others to life imprisonment.

However, the Orissa High Court commuted Singh’s death sentence to life imprisonment in 2005.  In 2011, the Supreme Court upheld the High Court’s judgement.
