State’s political fraternity mourns Jaitley’s demise

Sunday, 25 August 2019 | PNS | Ranchi

The political fraternity in Jharkhand, cutting across party lines and ideologies, mourned the death of former Finance Minister and veteran BJP leader Arun Jaitley on Saturday. Senior leaders remembered Jaitley’s contributions to Indian politics and poured in tributes on social media as well as in person.

Chief Minister Raghubar Das took to social networking platform, Twitter, to pay homage to Jaitley and express solidarity for his bereaved family. “Today we have lost an irreplaceable and integral part of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) family. May his soul rest in peace and may the almighty provide strength to the bereaved family at this hour of extreme agony,” Das tweeted.

The Chief Minister followed this tweet with another tweet in which he said that Jaitley’s ideologies and thoughts will keep guiding the country to new heights. “His unmatched oration even left the opposition in awe. His contribution in the development of the country can never be forgotten,” Das said in his second tweet.

Later in the day, Das told media persons that he will leave for New Delhi by air tonight and attend the last rites along with other senior BJP leaders on Sunday. “It is also a personal loss for me. He guided me even during the days when I headed the Jharkhand unit of BJP. One of the pillars of the country is gone forever,” he said.

Sixty six-year-old Jaitley was admitted at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi on August 9. He had been suffering from various ailments during the past couple of years and had also refused accept any portfolio in the latest cabinet of Prime Minister Narendra Modi due to his poor health. An official statement from AIIMS on Saturday said that he breathed his last in the hospital at 12.07pm.

The BJP on Saturday adjourned an ongoing meeting of the core committee in Ranchi soon after the news of Jaitley’s demise flashed on social media. The party had three important meetings to be chaired by Jharkhand’s election in-charge for the party, Om Prakash Mathur. All the meetings were cancelled.

Leader of Opposition, Hemant Soren, who also happens to be the Executive President of Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) expressed condolences to Jaitley’s family and wrote words of praise for the departed leader on Twitter. “Deeply saddened by the untimely demise of former Finance Minister Arun Jaitley Ji. He had been an excellent statesman, administrator, lawyer and a tall leader,” Soren tweeted. Former President of Jharkhand Pradesh Congress Committee (JPCC), Ajoy Kumar, said that Jaitley was a distinguished lawyer and a political stalwart.

Union Tribal Affairs Minister Arjun Munda shared an old picture of him and Jaitley on Twitter and wrote an emotional adieu message to the former Union Minister. “Adieu my friend! With a heavy heart I have to say final good bye because ordainments of God are irrevocable. Your warmth and infectious smile will remain etched in my memory forever,” Munda tweeted.

Later in the day, he told media persons that the country has lost a supremely capable person who selflessly served India in spite of his deteriorating health and put in place the biggest tax reform of the future in the country. “GST will remain synonymous with his (Jaitley’s) name,” said Munda.
