Strengthen Modi’s hands for development: Maneka Files nomination from Sultanpur

Friday, 19 April 2019 | PNS | Lucknow

Union minister and Bharatiya Janata Party leader Maneka Gandhi filed her nomination papers from Sultanpur Lok Sabha seat of UP after holding a massive roadshow on Thursday. Sultanpur goes to polls in the sixth phase on May 12.

It was Maneka Gandhi’s first public appearance after she was barred by the Election Commission from campaigning for 48 hours. She was penalised for her statement asking Muslims to vote for her else she would not entertain them once she got elected as MP.

The roadshow, which started from Shastri Nagar, took almost two hours to reach the Sultanpur collectorate and all the city roads were chock-a-block with people carrying saffron flags and raising pro-Narendra Modi slogans.

UP minister Moti Singh and Nishad Party chief Sanjay Nishad also accompanied Maneka Gandhi in the roadshow.

Addressing an election meeting at Deen Dayal Park, Maneka Gandhi said the pride of the nation had gone high under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the country had made all-round progress in the last five years that was unparalleled in the history of India.

“Every vote of yours will help in strengthening the hands of Prime Minister Modi,” she said, asking people to vote en bloc in favour of the BJP.

Moti Singh and Sanjay Nishad also addressed the gathering.

A seven-time MP, animal rights activist and environmentalist, Maneka Gandhi has been a minister in four Union governments and has also authored a number of books in the fields of etymology, law and animal welfare.

Maneka Gandhi was first elected to Parliament on Janata Dal ticket from Pilibhit in 1989 and got re-elected on Janata Dal ticket in 1996. In 1998 and 1999, she contested as Independent and won.

In 2004, she joined the BJP and won the Pilibhit seat. But in 2009, she shifted to nearby Aonla constituency leaving Pilibhit seat for her son Varun Feroz Gandhi. However, in 2014, she returned to Pilibhit while Varun moved to Sultanpur and in 2019 both mother and son swapped their seats.
