Tension prevailed at the Bramhanamara Upper Primary School under the Town police station in Mayurbhanj district on Thursday when a teacher of the school allegedly sexually assaulted a Class-VI girl student.
The teacher was identified as Prashant Bhujabal.
Sources said that Bhujabal found the minor girl alone at around 10 am and sexually assaulted her. The matter came to the fore after the girl informed her parents about it.
Following this, irate locals detained the schoolteacher and locked him up in a classroom. They also vandalised his car parked in the school.
Later, getting information police reached the spot and brought the tense situation under control.
Police personnel were deployed at the school to avoid any further untoward incident.
