THDCIL achieves milestone in Tehri dam project

Tuesday, 22 October 2019 | PNS | DEHRADUN

THDC India Limited achieved a major milestone on October 16 with commencement of erection work of electro-mechanical equipment in first unit of the 4x250 MW Tehri pumped storage plant at Tehri. Tehri Pumped Storage Plant (PSP) of 1,000 MW capacity will start electricity generation by December 2021. All four units of the project will be commissioned by June 2022.

Chairman and managing director of THDC India Limited, DV Singh inaugurated erection work of first generating unit of Tehri PSP in the presence of engineers from THDC, HCC and GE Power. GE Power, France is the leader of the GE-HCC consortium which is main contractor for this upcoming plant. Major part of civil works of the project has already been successfully completed by HCC.

Tehri PSP is the integral part of 2,400 MW Tehri power complex. Tehri HPP 1000 MW and Koteshwar HEP 400 MW are already under operation. Four number variable speed reversible turbines of 250 MW each will be installed for the first time in India in Tehri PSP. These turbines are more efficient in comparison to the fixed speed normal turbines. Tehri power complex is already working as peaking power station.

After its commissioning, 1,000 MW Tehri PSP will be a game changer in stabilising the national grid, State officials. The Government of India is planning to add 175 GW from renewal resources by 2022, so there may be variability of power in the grid. In that case Tehri PSP will play an important role towards grid stability. Tehri PSP is first project of its kind in the central sector, added THDCIL officials.
