Top cop visits Hauz Qazi, vows strict action against culprits

Saturday, 06 July 2019 | Staff Reporter | NEW DELHI

Delhi Police Commissioner Amulya Patnaik on Friday visited Central Delhi’s Hauz Qazi to review security arrangements after vandalisation of temple led to communal tension in the area on Sunday night.

Patnaik, along with other senior police officials, interacted with the locals and assured strict action against the culprits.

They also spoke to field officers who were on duty in the area for the last five days.

The visit was part of a confidence-building exercise and to assess the general security arrangement of the area.

On Sunday night, tension prevails in the highly sensitive Walled City area of the national Capital after clashes erupted between two groups belonging to different communities over parking issues.

It soon took an ugly turn after rumours spread that a youth from a particular community has been lynched by a mob.

Enraged over this, a mob vandalised a Shiva Temple in the Lal Kuan area after raising inflammatory religious slogans. The tension has reduced since.

According to a senior police official, the security presence in the areas has been brought down considerably.

“Till now, six people have been arrested and four juveniles have been apprehended in the case and more arrests are likely as searches for other suspects are underway,” said the senior police official.
