The Baghpat police claimed to have achieved a major success when they gunned down a hardened criminal carrying a cash reward of Rs 1.25 lakh on his arrest.

The encounter took place in the wee hours of Saturday.

According to reports, the cops of Doghat police station in Baghpat were tipped-off about the presence of some hardened criminals and they cordoned off the area on Friday night.

The police finally got success when in the wee hours of Saturday they spotted two suspected persons.

The cops tried to stop them but they suddenly opened fire on the police party in which police constable Anuj was hit by a bullet in the stomach.

The police team returned the fire and after a few minutes of cross-firing, they went ahead and found one criminal lying injured while his accomplice managed to flee the spot.

The police team rushed the injured criminal to hospital where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

The police identified the deceased as Vikas alias Phoni, a resident of the same area.

Police claimed that Vikas was named in dacoity and murder cases (in Meerut).

A .32 bore pistol and a huge cache of cartridges were recovered from the criminal.

Vikas was carrying a cash reward of Rs 1.25 lakh on his head, Circle Officer Ramala Anuj Chaudhary said.

Meanwhile, in a separate encounter which took place in Saharanpur, two unidentified criminals started firing at a police team late Friday night.

As a result, Sub-Inspector Amit Sharma and constable Vineet Kumar were injured.

A criminal carrying a reward of Rs 50,000 on his arrest was killed in retaliatory firing, the police claimed.

The criminal, identified as Muqueem Kala gang member Hafeez, was injured in the police firing.

He was taken to district hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police said more than two dozen cases were registered against Hafeez in Muzaffarnagar, Meerut, Gautam Buddha Nagar and Saharanpur districts.

Two pistols were recovered from Hafeez, according to the police.

An accomplice of Hafeez fled the spot and efforts are on to nab him, officials said.
