Two GRP men thrash journalist, suspended

Thursday, 13 June 2019 | PNS | Lucknow

Exposing the brutal face of the men in khaki, Government Railway Police (GRP) personnel thrashed a news channel reporter and urinated on him for doing a story on illegal vendors at Shamli railway station on Tuesday evening.

DGP OP Singh ordered suspension of the errant GRP cops, the state police tweeted Wednesday morning.

The journalist had gone to cover the derailment of a goods train near Dheemanpur railway crossing and he later went to Shamli railway station for updates when he was nabbed by the GRP personnel, brutally thrashed and put behind bars.

A video of GRP SHO Rakesh Kumar and constable Sunil Kumar thrashing journalist Amit Sharma went viral and a large number of journalists thronged the GRP station to protest the incident.

In the video, a constable in civvies is seen slapping and pulling the hair of the reporter and abusing him.

The journalist was later put in the lock-up where the SHO and constable subjected him to inhuman torture.

After much hullabaloo, the top cops woke up from their slumber and ordered a probe on Wednesday morning.

Preliminary investigation revealed that the GRP personnel were inebriated and they started beating Amit Sharma, who works for a prominent Hindi news channel, at the spot of derailment.

Sharma later alleged that the GRP men in plain clothes first damaged his camera and then thrashed him. “When I picked up the equipment, they hit and abused me. I was locked up, stripped and they urinated on me,” he alleged.

By Wednesday evening, the errant SHO and the constable were suspended and an FIR was registered against them for assaulting the journalist.

The entire media fraternity was furious over the incident as the video of the incident went viral on social media. Media persons in different parts of the state, particularly at Shamli, were holding protest against the incident and demanding registration of FIR and arrest of the accused GRP men.
