Two nabbed with 300 kg beef in Haridwar

Wednesday, 30 October 2019 | PNS | Haridwar

Two men were nabbed by the police while trying to smuggle about 300 kilogramme of beef in Jwalapur area of Haridwar on Tuesday.

According to the police, a tip off was received from an informant about some persons lodged in a hotel on Sarai Road near the Jatwara bridge. Acting on the tip off, the police checked a Tempo Traveller UK08-CA 5231 with four men and five large aluminium boilers containing beef. Two of the culprits ran away but the driver of the vehicle Afzal and his companion Shahraz were apprehended by the police. The beef was weighed and found to be about 300 kilogrammes.

The two men who were caught —Afzal and Shahraz — belong to Jwalapur while the other two who managed to escape have been identified as Jwalapur residents Salim and Faizan. The police have booked the two culprits nabbed under sections of the Cow and its Progeny Protection Act 2007.

It is pertinent to mention here that despite a ban on cow slaughter, this criminal activity is reported to be continuing at an alarming scale in Haridwar district.

The police undertake periodic drives but so far these have not been successful in preventing illegal cow slaughter. Observers point out that people abandoning domestic cattle also fuels the illegal cow slaughter business.
