Two students drown in Tons near Chandroti bridge

Two students, including one minor, drowned near Chandroti bridge while bathing in the Tons river on Tuesday. The deceased were reportedly preparing for National Defence Academy (NDA) and got swept away in the strong current of the Tons river. Their bodies have been recovered by the local police and local unit of State Disaster Response Force (SDRF). The parents of the duo have been informed by the local authorities.

The deceased have been identified as 17-year-old Anshuman Shukla and 18 year old Sachin Pundir. They were both residents at Rehman hostel in Jakhan area. According to the information provided by the local police, eight to 10 boys from Rehman hostel went for a picnic near Chandroti bridge near the popular picnic spot of Gucchupani.

Upon reaching there, three of the boys planned to bathe in the river during which two of them were swept away by the current.

Soon after receiving information, both district police and SDRF went out to rescue them. The body of deceased Anshuman was found first while for Sachin’s body the rescue teams had to search for another 45 minutes.

According to the information given by the students accompanying the deceased youngsters, both of them reportedly jumped from a height to dive into the river but the current of the river was too strong for them to swim back towards the shore.
