Two young men die in road accident, suspected to be drunk

Two young men in their early twenties died in a road accident late night on Thursday near IT Park, Sahastradhara Road. They were reportedly returning from a friend’s party at Rajpur Road when the accident happened.

The deceased have been identified as Kapil Rawat (21) and Naresh Rawat (22), both hailing from the same village in Uttarkashi. Deceased Kapil was studying Bachelors in Technology from THDC Institute of Hydropower Engineering and Technology in Tehri while Naresh was doing a private job in Dehradun.

According to the information provided by the police, both of them were returning late night from a party at Rajpur Road, when the rider lost balance of the motorbike and they collided with a wall on the roadside near IT Park. Receiving information about the accident and two boys being injured police reached the scene and through 108 ambulance they were taken to Government Doon Medical College Hospital, where the doctors declared them dead.

The parents and guardians of both the deceased have been informed while the case is being investigated.

It is pertinent to mention here that according to the information provided by traffic directorate, from the month of January to August about 92 cases of drunken driving accidents

have been reported in the state in which 51 people have lost their lives and 69 were severely injured. State police also have issued challan to about 7,102 people in the state for this traffic offence.

A senior traffic official has stated that even though rules and enforcement of law was there in the past too, people were fine with breaking rules.

Now that the in the amended provisions of Motor Vehicles Act, penalties have been raised some people have themselves started following traffic rules while some citizens especially youngsters still do not understand the gravity of such traffic offences.

For this police or transport department alone are not responsible as citizens themselves need to understand this point.
