The State-owned UJVN Limited owes a sum of Rs 300 crore to another state owned corporation Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited (UPCL). Under the power purchase agreement, the UJVN Ltd sells the electricity produced by it to the UPCL at Rs 1.41 per unit while the UPCL has to shell out Rs 5 per unit for the power purchased from other States. The Managing Director (MD) of UJVN Ltd, S N Verma said that the corporation sells its entire production to the UPCL. He said that Uttarakhand has a potential to generate 25,000 MW power from its hydropower resources. At present under the UJVN limited, 1292 MW hydroelectric projects are under operation and construction work is going on in 148.5 MW hydro power projects. The State is bearing the brunt of environmental issues and legal tangles as 24 projects with total generational capacity of 2944.80 MW have got stalled in the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi river basins. These projects are Bal Ganga II, Jhala Koti, Bharon Ghati, Jalandrigad, Siyangad, Kakoragad, Kotlibhel I A, Karamoli, Jadhganga, Rambara, Kotlibhel I B, Alaknanda, Khirao Ganga, Urgam III, Lata Tapovan, Malarijhelam, Jelamtamak, Tamaklata, Bhyundarganga, Rishiganga I, Rishiganga III, Bhirahiganga I, Gohana Tal and Kotlibhel III. The corporation achieved a power generation of 4,663.08 Million Unit (MU) in the year 2018-19 .
To increase the power generation, work of Renovation, Modernization and Upgradation (RMU) for renewal of old projects of the corporation is being done. RMU work is going on in Dhalipur and Tiloth power house.
By RMU works, the corporation has registered an increase of 36.76 % in power generation of Pathri power house. It has also enhanced the life of the project by another 35 years. Similarly, an increase of 32.66 % is reported in the power generation of Mohammadpur power station after completion of RMU works.
The UJVN Ltd officials claim that after RMU works, the power generation capacity of Khatima power house has been enhanced by 35.23 percent.
