A 60-year-old man allegedly shot himself after he came to know about his daughter's lesbian relationship. The incident was reported from national Capital's Shahdara area on Tuesday. Police though confirmed the suicide incident on Thursday and said they are investigating the case to ascertain the reasons behind this extreme step.
In 2018, the Supreme Court of India decriminalised homosexuality by declaring Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) unconstitutional.
According to a senior police official, a police control room (PCR) call regarding the incident was received on Tuesday night after which an Emergency Response Vehicle (ERV) was dispatched for the spot.
"The man identified as Banwari Lal was found lying in pool of blood at his residence. He had died on the spot. The body has been sent for autopsy. Banwari used to iron clothes for his living," said a senior police official.
"On prima facie enquiry, it was found that Banwari had argument with younger daughter. After quarrel he went outside and came after 20 mintues and shot himself in the outer room of his house as stated by his wife and his daughters who were present at the time of incident in the house," said the senior police official. "A case under section 25/27/54/59 arms act has been registered at Farsh Bazaar police station and
proceedings under section 174 of Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) is being carried out. The investigation is under progress," said the senior police official.
"Several relatives of Banwari on Tuesday had gathered at his house after they all came to know about the tribade relationship of his daughter. The girl's father was not in favour of this relationship and wanted girl to withdraw herself from this relationship but the girl refused," said a police official on anonymity.
"The relatives tried to calm down the situation but the man went inside the house and shot himself with a country-made pistol," he added.
