Virat among early voters in G’gram which sees 67% turnout

Gurugram constituency on Sunday witnessed 67.38% per cent voting till 10 pm in the sixth phase of the national election.

The highest voter turnout was recorded in Pataudi Vidhan Sabha constituency with 72% and lowest in Punahana constituency with 63.37%.

Polling was initially slow in Gurugram but started to pick pace as the day progressed. No untoward incident was reported in the Gurugram constituency across the day.

However, according to the election officer two election-related first information reports (FIRs) were registered in Nuh in the Gurugram constituency. Gurugram is one of the constituencies in 10-seat Haryana. Voting was held between 7 am across nine Vidhan Sabha constituency in three districts -- Gurugram (4), Rewari (2) and Nuh (3).

There has been 21.50 lakh registered voters in four Vidhan Sabha constituencies include Gurugram, Badshahpur, Sohna and Pataudi which make up Gurugram. Of 1,122 booths, 69 are 'sensitive' and 89 'highly sensitive' ones.

Gurugram District Election Officer and Deputy Commissioner (DC) Amit Khatri visited several polling stations across the day to observe the situations. Mohamad Akil police Commissioner, Gurugram along with other police officers had also visited several polling stations thought-out the day.

"The elections in the district held without any violence. There were some minor problems reported with few EVM machines the same was replaced immediately so that the voters could not face any problem in casting vote. The Gurugram constituency has three strong rooms in Gurugram, Rewari and Nuh districts where the EVM machines will be stored. The EVMs will be kept under CCTV surveillance and three layers of security as per the election commission mandate," Gurugram District Election Officer and Deputy Commissioner (DC) Amit Khatri said.

Apart from this, Indian cricket team skipper Virat Kohli and his family members cast their vote on Sunday  morning appealed to voters to exercise their franchise. He was first among early voters.

Before he left, a polling booth volunteer asked him if he could stand behind a cutout installed at the booth for a voter awareness programme for a photo, which he agreed. The cricketer then showed his inked finger as fans took his photos and selfies with him.

The contest in Gurugram is mainly between sitting BJP MP Rao Inderjit Singh and Captain Ajay Singh Yadav of the Congress.

Also in the fray is Mehmood Khan of the Jannayak Janata Party-Aam Aadmi Party alliance and Virender Rana of the Indian National Lok Dal (INLD).

Lok Sabha elections in 2019, Gurugram constituency has 21, 50 thousand registered electors-11,35,004 of the male and 10,04, 749 female and 5,148 physically challenged.

Around 4,000 police personnel and more than 1,300 home guards had been deployed across Gurugram to ensure free and fair elections, police said. At the time of the previous Lok Sabha elections in 2014, Gurugram had seen a 71.58% voter turnout in the Lok Sabha polls.

In 2014, Rao Inderjit Singh defeated Zakir Hussain of the INLD by a huge margin of 2,74,722 votes. The Union Minister of State had then promised to provide rail connection and water canal to Haryana's most backward district, Nuh. But none of the promises got fulfilled, says the Opposition.
