VVPAT tally could delay final results, says Sahoo

Thursday, 23 May 2019 | Staff Reporter | RAIPUR

Subrat Sahoo, Chief Electoral Officer, Chhattisgarh said on Wednesday that there will be a minimum of 11 rounds of counting and in case of any dispute it can go up to 22-25 rounds, depending on the situation.

This might delay final result announcement, the CEO said, adding that 5% of VVPAT machine slips will be also counted.

Addressing media persons, Sahoo said in case the EVM and VVPAT slip give different figures of vote polled, than the VVPAT slips tally will be considered as final.

He stated that the differences can be due to non-display of votes in EVM machine, or non removal of the mock poll votes.

Sahoo pointed out that this difference can be of one or two votes because the VVPAT slip can be accurate as mock poll slips are removed before actual poll begins. But the Returning Officer decision will be “full and final” for the votes polled.

For first time, Election Commission of India has made arrangement for the voters to know the results through Commission portal ‘Suvidha’ where even the voter trends in the entire country and also state can be seen, he said.

All the preparations at 27 counting centres have been completed. Citing example of Raipur Parliamentary constituency where counting of 7 Assembly constituencies will be held in Raipur and two segments in Baloda Bazar district, the Raipur Returning Officer will announce the final result of each round, while

ARO can give details of each round at local level of each constituency.
