Wanted gangster carrying Rs 50K reward arrested

With the arrest of a wanted gangster identified as Varun Bhardwaj (32) on Monday from Delhi’s Dwarka district, Delhi Police were able to avert a major gang war. The accused had allegedly jumped his parole on July 2018, to avenge the death of his friend, who was murdered by members of Shiva Suri gang. A reward of Rs 50,000 was declared for his arrest, police said.

According to police, the accused was involved in multiple cases of murder and attempt to murder. He was lodged in jail for a double murder case in Subzimandi Police Station in 2014, when he was released on parole for treatment of his mother who was suffering from cancer in July 2018.

However, police disclosed that he jumped his parole to take revenge on members of Shiva Suri gang for the murder of his close friend Bijender. “He absconded to Rajasthan and Haryana area and lived in disguise to remain untraceable,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Anto Alphonse stated in the official release.

On Monday, he arrived at Delhi on the occasion of Makar Sankranti in hope to spot his rival gang members but the information was relayed to police staffs.

“The team got information that a criminal involved in several cases of murder with a reward of Rs 50,000 over his head is roaming in Dwarka area with illegal weapons. The team laid a trap and arrested the accused Varun Bhardwaj near Radha Swami Satsang Bhawan, Pochanpur, Dwarka at about 3.00 pm. Hence a major an ensuing major gang war has been averted,” the DCP said.

During interrogation, police revealed that the accused was first arrested in 2005 under an Arms Act case of PaschimVihar police station and was lodged in Tihar Jail. In jail, he came in contact with members of the Nandu Gang and joined the gang after his release, police said.

Following this, he was involved in multiple cases of murder and attempt to murder cases and was arrested in 2014 in a double murder case, for the murder of two criminals Sonu Pahalwan and Bunty Pahalwan.
