Women politicians advocate larger role for women

Monday, 25 March 2019 | PNS | DEHRADUN

With most parties having fielded their candidates from all or some of the five parliamentary constituencies of Uttarakhand, out of the two national parties the Bharatiya Janata Party has fielded one woman candidate while the Congress has fielded all male candidates.

The Pioneer talked to the women members of political parties about their views on the apparently less preference being accorded to women as candidates in the parliamentary elections. A majority of women politicians opined that both big and small political parties talk of women empowerment but do not follow up when it comes to when it comes to acting in support of their views. Further, the women too seem to take limited interest in this.

Congress Mahanagar chief and PCC spokesperson Kamlesh Raman said, “I agree with the fact that women are given less preference when it comes in giving a ticket to any women candidate interested in representing the party from any of the constituencies. I think women also need to grow in this field more so that they are given preference. Also, the government should also reserve seats for women. If seats were reserved for women, only women would have been fielded by all parties from such a constituency. There is also a need to change the mentality regarding women political leaders, as now women are not behind men in any field.”

Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson Garima Dasauni said, “I think women are already burdened with so many things that even if they want to do something in this field they are stopped. Also no political party, public or voters should think that women are not good enough to lead. There is nothing that we are not able to do. If a woman can manage her family properly she can do everything.”

BJP Mahanagar chief Brijlesh Gupta said, “We are very happy that Mala Rajya Laxmi Shah will represent the party in the election from Tehri. I think that women get the chance or not we form and put together pieces of everything. In a political party, we form force and bring every member together which is a more important job to do.”

BJP women’s wing office bearer Praveen Sharma said, “I think that women should be given a chance to not only be members of the party but also to represent the party on the prominent seats. It is very also very important that women grow up and take an interest in this specific field.”

Uttarakhand Kranti Dal (UKD) women wing member Rama Chauhan said, “Yes I believe that it is very important that women should be given a chance to be selected as candidates in elections. The ratio of women in politics has been less in comparison to men which needs to be changed.”
