Work in coordination for increasing safety on roads: CS

The Chief Secretary (CS) of Uttarakhand, Utpal Kumar Singh, has directed the officials to repair and correct the places which have been earmarked as accident prone areas. He was undertaking a review meeting on road safety at secretariat on Wednesday.

The CS said that the department concerned should work in coordination for effective control on road accidents.

He said that a meeting should be convened for use of available budget on road safety fund. There is a provision to spend 25 percent of budget of the road safety fund on the works related with road safety.

In the meeting the additional chief secretary, Om Prakash said that 15000 sensitive spots have been earmarked in the state out of which 51 spots have been corrected by the Public Works Department (PWD) while 47 spots were repaired by National Highways Authority and PWD.

A total of 107 spots have been corrected and work on remaining others are presently going on under the aegis of PWD, NHAI, National Highway and Infrastructure development corporation and Border Roads Organisation.

The additional transport commissioner, Sunita Singh said that on the direction of the monitoring committee set up by the High Court, the ACS, PWD has made orders for appointment of an additional director level officer of transport department as member of lead agency. Officers of health and education department have already been appointed in the lead agency.

In the meeting, the ACS was informed that there has been a decline in the number of road accidents in the state as compared to the last year.

The meeting was also attended by Secretary, Transport, Shailesh Bagauli, Director General of Police Anil Kumar Raturi, DG Law and Order, Ashok Kumar and others.
