Working from home, Deoghar women become self dependent

Wednesday, 14 August 2019 | PNS | Ranchi

Manju Devi, a resident of Nandkura village of Deoghar district is not just supporting her family financially but also earning respect for herself in the eyes of her family and the society.

Member of a local women's self help group, Manju makes bamboo products at her home and sells them in the local market earning huge profits.

"I am able to earn money without stepping out of the house. This way I can give enough time to my family too," she said.

Like Manju, around 50 other women of Nandkura village in Kachuasoli Panchayat of Deoghar district have become an example of women empowerment. With the help of SHGs, these women are not just becoming self dependent but are also proving to be a role model for others, encouraging the women in neighouring villages to take up such work as well.

These women are making baskets, brooms, pen stands, flower pots, chairs, home decor items and a number of products sitting in their home and supplying it to the local market.

These SHG members were trained by the efforts of district administration and Jharkhand State Livelihood Promotion Society in the field of making bamboo products.

Deputy Commissioner of Deoghar, Rahul Kumar Sinha said, "The women are supporting their families and also able to save some money. The best part of this work from home system is that they do not have to go away from their house for long hours and they are able to look after their family and children while earning a decent amount of income at the same time."

These members of SHGs were first trained by the district administration and thein they were connected with the nearest bank and their bank accounts were opened. Once the formalities were over, the bank decides the cash credit limit and loan limit for these women. "A number of SHGs have been formed across the district through same process to make women self dependent," the DC said.

The DC has directed all the officials of concerned departments and banks to provide all possible support the SHGs so that the women cannot just get employment opportunity but also get loans easily.

"The district administration is also providing a market to these women to sell their products. We try out best to provide them market nearest to their home so they do not have to travel much," Sinha said.

He added, "The government and the district administration is working hard to take this work at a large scale and provide the women a bigger market so that the income and standard of living of these women is further improved."
