A workshop on plastic waste management was organised at the Indian Cambridge School on Tuesday.
Speaking on the occasion, the additional secretary and the director of the Panchayati Raj department, H C Semwal said that plastic consumption is rapidly increasing in India rapidly but now the use of disposable plastics should be stopped.
He appealed the people to abandon use of plastic grocery bags, plastic wraps, disposable cutlery , coffee cup lids and said that the use of bottled water should be minimised.
Addressing the students, he said that once plastic is discarded after its utility is over, it is known as plastic waste. He added that an estimated 70 percent of plastic packaging products are converted into plastic waste within a short span of time.
“Plastic waste affects our ground water , pollutes soil, ocean ,air and even plankton, the tiniest creature in our oceans, are eating micro plastics and absorbing their hazardous chemicals ,’’ he said.
Semwal said that the Panchayat Raj department has decided to set to plastic waste compactors in 95 panchayats in the state which would help in reducing the menace of plastic waste in villages.
The Academic coordinator of the school, Rubina Siddqui informed that the use of plastic within the school campus would be banned.
The former joint director D P Devrari, and principal of school Rachana Srivastava were also present on the occasion.
