A parody of 'Swachchh Bharat Abhiyan' seem to have turned alive Saturday when BJP MPs and Central Ministers picked up brooms to clean up the "cleanest of the places"- the Parliament complex- with some of them hardly allowing their brooms to touch the ground inviting scalding comments from Twitterati.
Film actress of yesteryears and Mathura MP Hema Malini bore the brunt of criticism of social media with some of advising her to have practice at home as how to wield broom before going for the photo op.
"Ma'am please practice how to wield the (broom) in private before your next photo op," National Conference leader Omar Abdullah tweeted. "This technique you've employed won't contribute much to improving cleanliness in Mathura (or anywhere else for that matter)."
Hema Malini had earlier appreciated the programme saying she would take it forward in her constituency Mathura. "It is highly appreciable that the Speaker of the House took initiative to carry out 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' on the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, in Parliament premises. I will go back to Mathura next week and carry out this Abhiyan there as well," she said.
Pre-empting any criticism, Abdullah said, "I knew sweeping the dormitories in Sanawar (Himachal Pradesh) would be useful for something. I'm now qualified to comment on the (sweeping) technique of others."
The NC leader mocked the cleanliness drive at the Parliament complex, saying it was one of the cleanest places in the country.
"But the Parliament complex is one of the cleanest places in the country, especially when the sessions are on, so what were they sweeping?" Abdullah, a three-time member of the Lok Sabha, tweeted.
A short video of the Bollywood actor cleaning a road inside the complex came in for severe criticism on social media as the broom of the Mathura MP was not even touching the ground as she swept.
In the first term of the Modi-government, the Delhi BJP leaders invited similar sharp comments with some of them seen to be cleaning a freshly arranged bunch of leaves on the roads of the National Capital as part of the 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan'.
Besides, Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla, Ministers Rajnath Singh, Pralhad Joshi, Harshvardhan, Anurag Tahkuar and several other BJP MPs participated in the event.
Addressing the dignitaries and others at the event, Birla said that the commencement of the Swachhata Abhiyan (Special Cleanliness Drive) in the Parliament House Estate is an endeavour to spread the message of Swachhata envisioned by Mahatma Gandhi.
Recalling that the Swachhata Abhiyan was launched earlier by Prime Minister Narendra Modi to coincide with the 150th birth anniversary of Gandhiji, Birla said that MPs are the representatives of 130 crore people of India in Parliament - the temple of democracy and have an important role to spread this awareness.
He further said that Swachhata (Cleanliness) is next to Godliness and this Swachhata Abhiyan is not only an Abhiyan of the Parliament House alone but will serve as an occasion to take the message ofSwachhata to every village and town of the country to keep the society healthy.
