Buoyed by the Congress stand to maintain distance from Samajwadi Party and Bahujan Samaj Party in the coming parliamentary elections in 2019, Congressmen in Lucknow distributed sweets, saying that now they would show that they could fight polls alone with more success than by standing behind others.
Interestingly, Congress president Rahul Gandhi has already taken an initiative in this regard by holding meetings with party leaders to chalk out electoral strategy for Uttar Pradesh without having any truck either with the SP or the BSP.
A day after the announcement of alliance by BSP chief Mayawati and SP president Akhilesh Yadav on Saturday, All-India Congress Committee general secretary Ghulam Nabi Azad and UP Congress president Raj Babbar will hold a meeting with the state leaders here on Sunday to convey to them Rahul Gandhi’s ‘master plan’ for winning the maximum number seats in Uttar Pradesh. They will also counter the attack made on the Congress by the chiefs of the two “regional outfits”.
“We are thankful to our party president Rahul Gandhi and state president Raj Babbar that they have taken note of our sentiments of going it alone in Uttar Pradesh. Now the party workers will not let them down and will once again revive the Congress in UP,” UPCC general secretary and incharge of Lucknow District Congress, Vinod Mishra said. “The Congress has shown in three Hindi heartland states that it can win polls without any support and now it will win maximum number of seats in UP and perform better than what it did in 2009 under almost similar conditions,” he added.
Meanwhile, sources in the party confirmed that senior Congress leaders including AICC general secretary and party in-charge of UP, Ghulam Nabi Azad will meet leaders in the state capital on Sunday to chalk out the party’s strategy. “Ghulam Nabi Azad, UPCC president Raj Babbar and other senior leaders will arrive in the state capital on Sunday to hold meeting for finalising the strategy,” revealed Virendra Madan, who is attached with UPCC chief.
All leaders from UP in the national committee and the AICC secretaries would be in Lucknow on Sunday, he said, adding that the district and local incharges would also be present during the meeting.
Sources said that Azad and Babbar would direct the party workers and leaders to go to the ground level and start preparations for holding successful public meetings of Rahul Gandhi, at least one in each division of UP, so that a clear and loud message could be sent to voters that the Congress had enough strength in UP to defeat its opponents. BSP chief Mayawati and SP president Akhilesh Yadav, while announcing their alliance in Lucknow, kept Congress out of the tie-up while leaving Amethi and Rae Bareli parliamentary seats for Congress president Rahul Gandhi and UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi, respectively.
