As a part of the third edition of Diksha series, Indira Gandhi National Centre for Arts (IGNCA), in a two-day programme, celebrated musicologist and sanskritist Acharya Brihaspati, remembering his life and various contributions. The first and second edition of the series were presented for Ustad Amjad Ali Khan and Hariprasad Chaurasia on Tuesday and Wednesday.
The first day of the event included two book launches — Acharya Brihaspati: 24 Raga, 124 Bandish with pendrives of 36 hours of recordings of the bandishes and Natyashastra, Chapter 28. It further conducted a lecture on ‘Acharya’s contribution to music’ by professor Bharat Gupta followed by Urdu Khayal sung by Sarita Pathak Yajurvedi. The session concluded with a qawwali by Ustad Yousuf Khan Nizami.
The second day began with a talk session by Dr Haricharan Varma on the contribution of Brihaspati in All India Radio (AIR). The afternoon session included a discussion on the ‘poetic beauty of Parvati Lasyam’, a Sanskrit kavya by Brihaspati. The session concluded with a bharatnatyam dance performance titled Parvati Lasyam, choreographed by Dr Vidya Rao.
