The New Delhi Municipal Council’s (NDMC) new method to remind consumers to pay their electricity and water bills has helped the organisation reduce collection costs and faster realisation time for revenues

The New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) has bagged the ‘Digital Payments Innovation Award’ under the Five Lakh Population category of Smart Cities. The award was felicitated by the Minister of State for Housing and Urban Affairs, Hardeep S Puri, in the Smart City Conference, in the presence of the Delhi Lieutenant Governor, Anil Baijal, at the Second Apex Conference of Smart City CEOs held at the Convention Centre at NDMC Headquarters in Delhi.

The two-day Second Apex Conference of Smart City CEOs was organised by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, which saw participation from CEOs, executives and experts of 100 Smart Cities of the country.

The minister congratulated NDMC for their excellent performance in Smart City Initiatives undertaken in the capital city and said that NDMC should guide the other civic bodies of Delhi to replicate the Smart City Initiative Projects for delivery of citizen centric services. He urged the citizen for a behavioral change towards their civic responsibilities as well as civil duties of citizenship.

L-G Delhi, Anil Baijal, said that the other civic bodies like three Municipal Corporations and Delhi Cantonment Board should follow the footprints of NDMC in making an impact on ease of living for citizens in terms of sustainable environment and application of Smart Solutions. He further added that the capital city has five civic bodies which have different problems with different challenges of solutions but the New Delhi Municipal Council is all together different in all of them for implementation of global benchmark Smart Initiatives for better delivery of Citizen Centric Services. He emphasised on the health and safety concerns of the citizen in every initiative or innovation of Urban Affairs.

On receiving the award, NDMC Chairman, Naresh Kumar, informed that NDMC has launched India’s first of its kind, in-home Smart Bill Payment initiative, where it had arranged to develop novel ‘Smiley Fridge Magnets’ for the digital payment of utility bills. These magnets have been distributed to the electricity and water consumers of New Delhi area.

He said, “As many as 1,000 fridge magnets had been distributed in the first phase and 5,000 will be distributed by the end of this month. A total of 25,000 NDMC consumers would be covered by May this year under the scheme. These innovative fridge magnets would be personalised and each consumer would have a unique QR Code mapped to their consumer account (CA) number. There would be separate magnets provided for both electricity and water bills.” Kumar further added that the consumers can stick these magnets on their refrigerators at home and scan the QR Code on the magnet to pay their bills instantly. The QR Code will re-direct the consumers to their current bill with an option to pay using any of the digital payment channels active with NDMC like online credit/debit cards, Net Banking, Wallet and UPI. “This fridge magnet will be very useful especially in the case where a consumer misplaces the pending paper bill. From NDMC’s perspective it would reduce collection costs and faster realisation time for revenues,” said Kumar.
