103 die, 2,287 test +ve in Maha

After a gap of three days, the deaths caused by Covid-19 touched a three-digit figure once again in Maharashtra on Tuesday, as an alarming 103 people succumbed to the coronavirus and 2,287 others tested positive for the pandemic in various parts of the state.

With fresh deaths and infections, the total number of deaths in Maharashtra rose to 2,465, while the total infected cases jumped to 72,300.  With as many 31,333 patients having already been discharged from hospitals after full recovery, the state health authorities pegged the number of “active cases” in the State at 38,493.

The number of deaths in Maharashtra increased 99 on Saturday, 89 on Sunday, 76 on Monday to 103 on Tuesday. There had been a total of 694 deaths in Maharashtra during the previous six days. On May 26 (Tuesday) the state had witnessed 97 deaths, while there were 105 deaths on May 27, 85 deaths on May 28, 116 deaths on May 29 and 99 deaths on May 30, 89 deaths on May 31, 76 on June 1 and 103 on June 3. Of the total deaths reported on Tuesday, Mumbai accounted for 49, while there were 10 deaths each in Pune and Mira-Bhayandar, six deaths each in Raigad and Satara, four deaths each in Navi Mumbai, Panvel, three deaths each in Sangli and Akola and one death each in Thane, Nashik and Ahmednagar.

Out of the 103 dead, 68 were men and 3 were 5 women. Fifty nine of them aged over 60 years, 39 were from the age group 40 to 59 years and 5 were aged below 40 years.  “Sixty nine out of 103 patients (67%) had high-risk co-morbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease,” a state health bulletin said. In Mumbai, with the latest 49 deaths  and 1109 new positive cases, the total number of deaths went up to 1368, while the total infected cases rose to 42216. The authorities said that the total number of “active cases” in the metropolis was 23629. Out of 4,83,875 laboratory samples  tested so far, 72,300 have positive for COVID-19 until Tuesday.

There are 3730 active co+ntainment zones in the state currently. Total 19,019 surveillance squads worked across the stateon Tuesday and surveillance of 71.61 lakh population was done.

In some key observations mentioned in Tuesday’s health bulletin included:  the  recovery rate in the state  stand at 43.33 per cent, while the  case fatality rate in the state is 3.4 per cent

Currently, 5,70,453 people are in home quarantine. There are 72,538 beds available in quarantine institutions and 35,097 people are in institutional quarantine currently.

Meanwhile, during the last month, BYL  Nair hospital rapidly augmented the bed capacity to 1024 with oxygen support and 70 beds with ventilator / ICU, 110 beds are kept for pregnant women who are corona positive.

Citing a success story, the Brihanmumbai Muhnicipal Corporation (BMC) said    “Three hypertensive male patients aged 72 years 70 years and 76 years were admitted in· MICU, all were Covid positive and in Acute Respiratory Distress. All three patients were given oxygen support along with antibiotics, steroid & other standard treatment. All the patients fully recovered after few days of hospital stay and were discharged,” the BMC said.

In another case, 55-year-old man with poorly controlled diabetes, came with 75 per cent lung involvement on due to corona. “He recovered well with proper blood sugar control and other medication. One senior Health Care Provider was admitted with breathlessness, hypoxemia and uncontrolled diabetes. He required ventilation. He was also given Inj. Tocilizumab in addition to standard medication. He recovered well in 8 days and was discharged,” the BMC said.

According to the BMC, Tocilizumab injection was given in 120 patients of which the condition orf 108 patients improved and they recovered.  The information  about critical covid 19 patients admissions in B.Y.L. Nair Hospital  is as follows: of the 508  patients admitted in very serious condition (March to May), 250 improved on treatment, while 110 patients were discharged.
