Sunday, 23 August 2020 | Kumar Chellappan | CHENNAI

Vinayaka Chathurthi and the 381st Foundation Day of Chennai City turned out to be a day people would like to forget because of the coronavirus pandemic. Chennai Day is an occasion to commemorate the founding of the city of Madras (present day Chennai) as it was on August 22, 1,639 that the East India Company bought the Chennapattanam from the Vijayanagar Empire.

On Madras Day 2020, with most of the people confined to their homes and places of dwelling, the State diagnosed 5,980 new Covid-19 patients. The day also saw 80 persons getting succumbed to the pandemic with Chennai alone recording 11 deaths.

The only news that gave some consolation to Tamil Nadu was the slight fall in the number of positive cases and deaths from that of Friday. (On Friday, there were 5,995 new cases and 101 deaths).

Chennai saw 1,294 new persons getting diagnosed with Covid- 19 (slightly more than the 1,282 tested positive on Friday) on Saturday. Its neighbouring districts Chengalpet ( 406), Kancheepuram ( 257) and Thiruvallur (3840 remained critical showing no abatement in the number of patients.

Situation in Coimbatore (389) and Cuddalore ( 309) continued to be issues of concern for the Government as number of patients remained critical. As on Saturday evening, the State has 53,710 active Covid-19 cases.
