The Delhi Police on Thursday provided a fast-moving green corridor of over 18 kilometers for a live heart from IGI Terminal-2 to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Hospital in National Capital.
Police said that the heart was flown from Vadodara and took 12 minutes to reach destination from Terminal-2 to AIIMS.
According to a senior police official, police had received an emergent request from Dr (Professor) Aarti Vij, HOD, ORBO AIIMS wherein it was informed that a human heart under VAD (ventricular assist device) is being flown from Vadodara to Delhi for heart transplant surgery by Indigo flight 6E2512 at 2:30 pm at Terminal-2 on Thursday and that a fast-moving green corridor is required from T-2 to AIIMS Hospital to avoid wastage of time.
“The traffic police swung into action and immediately deputed officers and a green corridor for the emergency service, viz ambulance carrying ‘live heart’ was planned,” said the senior police official.
“The traffic inspectors piloted the ambulance throughout the route of 18.5 km starting from Terminal-2 to AIIMS. It took 12 minutes for ‘heart’ to reach its destination, which would otherwise take anything between 35-40 minutes,” he said.
