Maha: 99 more deaths, 2,940 test +ve

The Covid-19 triggered fatalities hovered shockingly around triple digit mark for the fifth consecutive day on Saturday, as 99 more people succumbed to coronavirus and 2,940 others tested positive for the pandemic in various parts of the state.

Of the total deaths,  Mumbai accounted for an astoundingly day’s highest of 54 deaths, while there were seven deaths each in  Vasai-Virar and Panvel, six deaths each in Thane, Pune and Solapur, three deaths each in Raigad and Jalgaon, two deaths each in Navi Mumbai,  Kalyan-Dombivli, and one death in Nagpur. In addition, two persons belonging to Rajsthan and Bihar died in Mumbai.    

There have been a total of 502 deaths in Maharashtra during the last five days. On May 26 (Tuesday) the state had witnessed 97 deaths, while there were 105 deaths on Wednesday, 85 deaths on Thursday and 116 deaths on Friday. The Covid-19 toll on Saturday  was 99.

With the fresh fatalities and infections, the total number of deaths in the State mounted to 2,197 and total infected cases jumped to a staggering 65168.

With 54 fresh deaths and 1,510 new infections, the total number of deaths in Mumbai rose to 1,227, while the infected cases jumped to 38,442.

As many as 1,084 patients were discharged from various hospitals on Saturday. With as many as 28,081 patients having so far been discharged after full recovery, the state authorities pegged the total “active cases” in the state at 34,881. 

Of the dead on Saturday, 62 were men while 37 were women. Forty eight of them were aged over 60 years, 49 were from the age group 40 to 59 years and 2 were aged below 40 years. “Sixty six out of 99 patients (67%) had high-risk co-morbidities such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, etc,” a state health bulletin said. Out of the total deaths reported today, 40 deaths occurred in the last two days and the rest are from the period May 6 to May 27.

In some of the key observations, patient doubling time for the state was 11.3 days during the last week, it has now improved to 17.5 days. The same for the country is 17.1 days.   The recovery rate in the state is 43.07 per cent. The mortality rate in the state is 3.37 per cent.  Currently, 5,51,660 people are in home quarantine. There are 72,681 beds available in quarantine institutions. As many as 35,420 people are in institutional quarantine currently

Out of 4,33,557 laboratory test samples, 65,168 tested positive for Covid-19 until Saturday. There are 43 government and 34 private (77 total) laboratories functioning in the state currently. As many as 3349 tests per 10 lakh population are being conducted.

At the national level, it is 2523 tests per 10 lakh population. There are 3,169 active containment zones in the state currently. Total 17,917 surveillance squads worked across the state on Saturday dand surveillance of 68.51 lakh population was done

Meanwhile, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporatiohn (BMC) came up success stories in the treatment of Covid-19 patients at LTMG Hospital at Sion in north-central Mumbai.

In one case, a 90-year-old female patient from Dharavi having Hypertension came with· breathlessness, fever, and cough and oxygen saturation less than 84% with X-ray shadows. She was treated with oxygen, antibiotics, steroids and other medicines. After almost 1 week she improved and finally oxygen was stopped, she started walking and speaking. She was later discharged.

In the second case, a  57 year old male  hypertension patient came with breathlessness, fever, and cough with oxygen saturation of 76 per cent.

“He was given oxygen treatment with special system called HFNC (High Flow Nasal Cannula) along with other medicines for 8 days and his saturation improved to 98 per cent finally patient is comfortable and ready to be discharged,” a BMC medical bulletin said.

Thirty eight serious patients were given medicine Tocilizumab,  of which the condition of 22 patients improved and  seven have been discharged.
