Pak handlers using drones to drop weapons in Valley

Wednesday, 23 September 2020 | Mohit Kandhari | Jammu

After failing to smuggle big consignments of arms and ammunition inside the Indian territory via the land route, the Pakistan based handlers of different terrorist outfits have frequently started using 'drones' to dump weapons and narcotics to maintain the supply of weapons to their cadre and newly recruited local terrorists in Jammu & Kashmir.

In the recent months at least half a dozen attempts to smuggle arms and ammunition using drones have come to light in Jammu region.

Initially drones were used to airdrop weapons from across the International border but last week the Indian Army also recovered a consignment of weapons and narcotics airdropped by a drone along the line of control in the forward areas of Rajouri district.

Interestingly, three LeT cadre from the South Kashmir area had trekked all the way from Kashmir via Mughal road to receive the consignment of weapons but were arrested by the security personnel while searches were going on in the forest area of  Gurdanbala, four kilometers from Rajouri.

Senior security officers say, its a new 'challenge' for them. “We are working towards exposing the network of Over ground workers across Jammu region who are acting as couriers and ready to ferry these arms and ammunition consignment to the Kashmir valley”.

Meanwhile, on Tuesday another consignment of weapons airdropped from a drone was recovered by the joint team of Jammu police and special forces of the Indian army from the border area of Akhnoor. According to the official sources, the arms consignment was meant to be airdropped inside the Indian territory from where it was expected to be ferried to a hideout of terrorists with the help of a network of over ground workers in the region.

Senior Superintendent of Police, Jammu Shridhar Patil said, “after receiving intelligence inputs  a joint search operation was launched by the Jammu police along with special forces of the Indian army in the border belt of Akhnoor on Tuesday”.

He said,  during the search operations in village Sohal of Akhnoor, two consignments were recovered by the security personnel.

SSP, Jammu said, these packets were airdropped by a drone from across the border.

“Two AK 47 rifles, a pistol, three AK magazines with 90 rounds, 2 pistol magazines with 14 rounds, some packing material and rolls of wires were seized”, he added. A case FIR under relevant sections of law has been registered at police station Akhnoor to carry out further investigations in the case.

According to preliminary investigations, Patil revealed the weapons were meant to be handed over to terrorists for carrying out subversive activities in Jammu and Kashmir. Out initial probe suggests JeM is behind this.

Earlier on June 20, alert jawans of the Border Security Force (BSF) had shot down a GPS fitted drone which carried a payload of around 6 kgs including a US made M-4 semi automatic carbine, 7 Chinese grenades and sixty rounds packed in two magazines, along the International border in Hiranagar sector of Kathua district.

After repeated incidents of arms dropping via drone in Tarn Taran area of Punjab in September 2019, this was the first incident of arms dropping along the International border in Jammu region.

Director General of Police, Dilbagh Singh during his interaction with the media on June 8 had also dropped clear hints claiming attempts were being made by the terrorist operatives to supply arms and ammunition to their cadre and use of drones have been attempted.

In the past, truck drivers working as active OGW's of terror outfits have ferried armed infiltrators and arms consignment along the road link to Kashmir valley from the notorious Hiranagar sector.
