Tamil Nadu is on its way to bring down the Covid-19 cases in the State to a reasonable level if the figures released by the Department of Health om Tuesday are any indication.

On Tuesday, 5,337 persons were diagnosed with Covid-19 while 76 deaths were reported from various parts of the State.

There are 46,350 active Covid-19 cases across the State as on Tuesday evening. This should be read against the number of Covid-19 cases in neighbouring Kerala, where the figures reached 40,382 by Tuesday evening.

Pinarayi Vijayan, Kerala chief minister had claimed early May that his State was the benchmark as far as controlling of Covid-19 pandemic was concerned. Total fatalities in Tamil Nadu reached 8,947 by Tuesday

The ray of hope in the release issued by the Government of Tamil Nadu is in the number of patients recovered from the pandemic which crossed 4.97 lakh till date. The day also saw the testing of 82, 928 persons across the State for the pandemic. There are 176 Covid testing facilities in the State and the directorate of health continues its testing in an aggressive mode.

While Chennai (989) and Coimbatore (595) led the table with the highest number of persons diagnosed with the pandemic on Tuesday, other districts showed a fall in new cases. Tiruppur, the knitwear capital of the country with a considerable migrant workers population (369), Salem (290) , the native district of chief minister Edappadi Palaniswami, Chengalpet (231), Cuddalore (233) and the holi district of Kancheepuram (209) were regions of concern.
