9K plus cases 2nd day in a row; situation grim

North-eastern States as well  as Jammu & Kashmir, Haryana, Uttarakhand, and Bihar saw a huge spike in the number of cases on Thursday that pushed the countrywide tally to 9,000 plus for the second day in a row amid indications that the coming days could see worsening of the situation in the country.

India’s total count in the country to 2,26,634 as 9,910 cases were reported on Thursday including 274 deaths taking the toll to 6,363.

Maharashtra achieved yet another dubious feat on Thursday, as a record 123 people succumbed to coronavirus and 2,933 others tested positive for the pandemic, taking the total number of deaths to 2,710 and infected cases in the State to 77,793.

A day after 122 people died of Covid-19, the State surpassed its earlier day’s highest tally and registered a record 123 deaths on Thursday.

Mumbai accounted for 48 deaths, while there were 21 deaths in Jalgaon, nine deaths in Pune, eight deaths in Thane, seven deaths in Solapur, six deaths in Navi Mumbai.

There were five deaths in Aurangabad, three deaths each in Raigad and Nashik, two deaths in Kolhapur, Washim and Parbhani, one death each in Vasai-Virar, Palghar, Panvel, Dhule, Jalna, Latur, Osmnabad, Nanded and Yavatmal.

There have been a total of 939 deaths in Maharashtra during the previous 10 days. On May 26 (Tuesday) the State had witnessed 97 deaths, while there were 105 deaths on May 27, 85 deaths on May 28, 116 deaths on May 29 and 99 deaths on May 30, 89 deaths on May 31, 76 on June 1, 103 on June 2, 122 on June 3 and 123 on June 4.

The Union Territory of Jammu & Kashmir on Thursday recorded the biggest ever jump of 285 cases of coronavirus, taking the total tally of cases to 3,142 and active cases to 2,059. With one more death reported from Kashmir the death toll too has gone up to 35 while the total recoveries touched 1,048 on Thursday.

While 63 cases were reported from Jammu division, 222 cases were reported from Kashmir division on Thursday.

Haryana stood at 3,281 cases with a steep hike of 327 cases and one fresh death taking the casualties to 24. Uttarakhand recorded 60 new cases from the base of 1,085, more than five per cent jump in a single day, taking the total number of cases to 1,145 and death figure to 10.

The focus on Thursday was clearly on the North-East, which had largely remained untouched by the coronavirus till the beginning of May. On Thursday, Tripura recorded 151 fresh cases, a rise of nearly 30 per cent from the base of 471.

Similarly, Assam witnessed 158 new cases on Thursday taking the total coronavirus cases to 1,989 with four deaths until now.

Nagaland, which had so far 60 cases, registered 22 new cases on Friday, while Manipur added 13 cases to its tally of 108. Mizoram also chipped in with three cases taking its total count to 17.

Tamil Nadu registered a high rise of 1,387 with total confirmed cases of 27,259 and death of 23 with total toll in the State reaching 231.

Capital of Tamil Nadu Chennai had a rise of 1,106 cases with a total 18,693 positive cases and 14 fresh deaths the toll to 167 in the city.

Gujarat witnessed a spike of 492 cases taking total cases in the State to 18,609 and registering 33 new deaths totalling total deceased toll in the State to 1,155.

Gujarat's capital Ahmedabad itself recorded 13,354 cases with a rise of 291 and registered 28 deaths taking casualties in the city to 938.

West Bengal recorded 6,876 cases with rise of 368 cases and fresh death of 10 taking total casualties in the State to 355.

Uttar Pradesh with a rise of 367 cases took the confirmed cases in the State to 9,237 with 15 deaths and total deaths at 245. Similarly, Karnataka with the rise of 257 stood at 4,320 cases recording four deaths and total fatalities to 57.

Madhya Pradesh saw an addition of 174 cases and six deaths, taking its tally of cases to 6,762 and death count to 377.

Bihar had a rise of 94 new cases with the total confirmed cases of coronavirus reaching 4,420 with three new deaths taking virus affected casualties to 28 in the State. Telangana which has faced much criticism for its low testing recorded 127 cases, which took its overall count 3,147.
