A massive political row has erupted over the inclusion of the names of several political personalities, including Sitaram Yechury and Yogendra Yadav in a disclosure statement of an accused in the Delhi riot supplementary chargesheet .
In addition to Yechury and Yadav, renowned economist Jayati Ghosh, Delhi University Professor Apoorvanand, and documentary filmmaker Rahul Roy figure as persons who had, allegedly played a role in fanning the riot by making provocative speeches.
The issue is likely to rock the Parliament Monsoon Session beginning on Monday even as both Yechury and Yadav have slammed the Delhi Police and asked why no action was taken against the real provocateurs like Kapil Mishra and Union Minister Anurag Thakur.
On its part, the Delhi Police on Sunday denied reports that a supplementary chargesheet was filed in the Delhi riots case against some activists, including CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury, Yogendra Yadav and Jayanti Ghosh among others.
“It is clarified that Sitaram Yachury Shri Yogendra Yadav and Jayati Ghosh have not been arraigned as accused in the supplementary chargesheet filed by the Delhi Police,” the Delhi Police said through a tweet.
Referring to a PTI tweet on the subject, a Delhi Police spokesperson said, “In a case related to Jafrabad riots…it has been mentioned in one of the online news agency reports that the names are part of the disclosure statement of one of the accused in connection with organising and addressing the anti-CAA protests."
"The disclosure statement has been truthfully recorded as narrated by the accused person,” added the statement. “However, a person is not arraigned as an accused only on the basis of a disclosure statement. It is only on the existence of sufficient corroborative evidence that further legal action is taken. The matter is currently sub judice."
The CPI(M) polit bureau has blamed the Delhi Police for bringing its leaders’ names in the Delhi riots related case chargesheet and decided to take up this issue in the Parliament Session.
Slamming the Delhi police, Yechury tweeted, “ Delhi Police is under the Centre and Home Ministry. Its illegitimate, illegal actions are a direct outcome of the politics of BJP’s top leadership. They are scared of legitimate peaceful protests by mainstream political parties & are misusing state power to target the Opposition. “ .
Yuchury went on to add that BJP govt was scared of questions, in Parliament, in media and RTI. “ PM can't hold a press conference or answer RTIs about his private fund or show his degree. They think they can silence political opposition by blatant misuse of state power. We fought Emergency, we’ll defeat this too,” he said.
Yadav also slammed the police for trying to drag them in the riot and said how it could overlook the role of BJP leader Kapil Mishra and Union minister Anurag Thakur, who made provocative speeches and egged on the protestors to open fire.
