Steady rise raises India’s Covid count to over 60L

With an average over 85,000 cases per day during the last fortnight, India on Sunday crossed the six-million mark of the coronavirus cases. The second-most-affected country by the numbers of active and total cases, and third by the fatality count, India has added 6,72,564 cases since September 20. The last one million cases for India have come in just 12 days.

With this speed, India will surpass the United States (7,290,347) in the next 15-20 days.

The fatality cases will cross one lakh in the next 5-6 days with an average of 1100-1200 cases per day. According to the Health Ministry’s data, 10 States and UTs — Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Delhi, West Bengal and Chhattisgarh — account for 80 per cent of the new cases reported in a day.

The five most affected States by total cases are Maharashtra (13,39,232), Andhra Pradesh ( 6,75,674), Tamil Nadu (5,80,808), Karnataka (5,75,566), and Uttar Pradesh (381491). There are five States with the biggest 24-hour jump in total cases are Maharashtra (18,056), Karnataka (9,543), Kerala (7,445), Andhra Pradesh (6,923), and Tamil Nadu  (5,791).

A total 76 per cent of the new recovered cases are found in 10 States and UTs —Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Odisha, Delhi Chhattisgarh, Kerala and West Bengal. Maharashtra continues to top this list.

Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan on Sunday said the Indian population is still far from reaching herd immunity against Covid-19 as shown by the Indian Council of Medical ResearchRs s (ICMR) second Sero Survey.  As reports of coronavirus reinfection in the country emerge, the Minister said such cases are under investigation.

Several cases of Covid re-infection have been reported from Assam and Bengaluru, sparking worry. At least half a dozen doctors across medical colleges in Assam, who were infected with the coronavirus in the line of duty and had later tested negative, had again developed COVID-19 symptoms and tested positive.

Maharashtra recorded 18,056 new coronavirus positive cases on Sunday, which pushed the state’s overall tally to 13,39,232. With the death of 380 patients during the day, the toll reached 35,571. A total of 13,565 patients were discharged on Sunday. With this, the state’s recovery count stands at 10,30,015. There are 2,73,228 active cases in the state at present. Mumbai recorded 2,261 new cases and 44 deaths, taking active cases to 26,593 and death toll to 8,791. Meanwhile, Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) collected Rs 52,76,200 fine for 1,4207 violation of face masks norms between April 20 to September 26.

Karnataka has registered 9,543 new Covid-19 cases and 79 deaths in a span of 24 hours. The state’s tally has now climbed to 5,75,566, including 4,62,241 discharges, 8,582 deaths and 1,04,724 active coronavirus cases. Most of the cases were reported from -- Bengaluru Urban (4217), Mysuru (952), Dakshina Kannada (460), Hassana (408), Udupi (320), Ballari (310), Tumakuru (282), Mandya (276), Bengaluru Rural (213), Chikkamangaluru (206), Chitradurga (198), Chikkaballapura (195), Belagavi (184), and more.

 Kerala registered its biggest single-day spike in COVID-19 cases in the last 24 hours with 7,445 additions, taking the total number of those infected in the state to 1.74 lakh. Kozhikode district reported 956 fresh cases, the highest in the state followed by Malappuram with 915 and Thiruvananthapuram 853. The state also saw 21 deaths taking the toll to 677.

Coronavirus in Andhra Pradesh reported 6,923 coronavirus positive cases and 45 deaths due to the deadly virus in the last 24 hours. The overall positive cases stood at 6,75,674 while the deaths at 5,708.

Tamil Nadu recorded 5,791 new COVID 19 cases in a single day, taking the total cases to 5,80,808, including 5,25,154 recoveries. The number of deaths was recorded to be 80. The total death toll stands at 9,313. Uttar Pradesh has recorded 4,250 new cases and 77 deaths reported in last 24 hours, taking the number of  cases 387491 with active cases of 55,603 and 5,594 deaths.

The national Capital has reported 3292 fresh cases and 42 fatalities in a single day, taking the total number of cases to 2,71,114 including 2,36,651 recoveries/discharges/migrations and 5235 deaths. According to Health Minister Satyendra Jain, the overall case fatality rate is 1.94 per cent. The occupancy of beds in Delhi hospitals has declined in the last four-five days and 55 per cent of the total beds are unoccupied currently, the minister added. West Bengal reported 3,185 new COVID-19 cases, 2,946 recoveries and 60 deaths onm Sunday, taking total cases to 2,47,425 including 2,16,921 recoveries and 4,781 deaths. Odisha’s COVID-19 tally rose to 2,09,374 on Sunday as 3,922 more people tested positive for the disease, while 14 fresh fatalities pushed the state’s coronavirus death toll to 797.

The Ministry’s data showed, a total of 92,043 people have recuperated from COVID-19 in a span of 24 hours, taking India’s total recoveries close to 50 lakhs and exceeding the active cases of coronavirus infection by 39,85,225. As many as 21 states and UTs have reported higher numbers of new recoveries than the new cases.
