The lockdown due to COVID-19, has majorly contributed and led to a rise in unhealthy eating habits, further leading to weight gain. Blame it on restricted movements, no access to gyms, decreased physical activity or indulgence in junk food, obesity induced due to unhealthy lifestyle imposed by forced confinement has become a matter of concern for many.

The situation is grimmer for people who are already struggling with obesity for whom weight gain has escalated in the past few months aggravating health problems like sleep apnea, Diabetes, hypertension and breathing difficulties. Such people are extremely susceptible and at a high risk to the fatalities of COVID-19 as obesity results in heightened inflammation in patients and in severe COVID-19 cases, it worsens the condition of the patient.

Dr Arun Prasad, Senior Consultant, Surgical Gastroenterology & Bariatric Surgery at Indraprastha Hospitals said, “Working from home, increased snacking between meals and a reduction in everyday physical activities — all in an effort to stop the spread of the virus — means we're moving less than ever. Recent reports have stated that the risk of death is more people in the overweight who happen to get infected with COVID-19. Younger people who are obese are also at a higher risk. Obesity is a growing problem worldwide and our complacent response to the current situation contributes to obesity in many ways. The number of people considered obese has nearly tripled in the past few decades.”

A 29-year-old male, weighing 201 kgs underwent a robot assisted bariatric surgery at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals on August 14. Post-surgery the patient will gradually loose about 10 kg a month in the coming time and should eventually lose over a100 kg.
