Bremen's Bundesliga future on edge

Bremen: Werder Bremen's Bundesliga future remained in doubt after being held to a 0-0 draw by second-division Heidenheim in the first leg of their relegation-promotion playoff. Bremen, which finished third from bottom in the top division, will have to do without captain Niklas Moisander for the second leg on Monday after he was sent off late with his second yellow card for a poor challenge. Heidenheim, based in the state of Baden-Württemberg in southwestern Germany, is bidding to reach the Bundesliga for the first time.

Hero Indian Open cancelled

New Delhi: Hero Indian Open, the biggest golf tournament the country hosts, was on Friday cancelled owing to the Covid-19 pandemic. The tournament, co-sanctioned by the European Tour, was earlier scheduled to be held from March 19 to 22 in Gurugram but was postponed. The women's Indian Open was also cancelled on Tuesday due to the pandemic. "Keeping in mind the health and safety of everyone as top most priority, we have decided to cancel this year's Hero Indian Open," Devang Shah, Chairman of the Indian Golf Union (IGU) said.

Inter sign Hakimi on five-year deal 

Milan: Inter Milan have signed full-back Achraf Hakimi from Real Madrid, the two clubs announced on Thursday. Inter will pay Madrid 40 million euros ($44.9 million) for Hakimi, with a further five million euros due in variables. The 21-year-old has signed a five-year contract with Antonio Conte's side. Hakimi joined Madrid's youth set-up in 2006 but struggled to establish himself in the first team and has spent the last two seasons on loan at Borussia Dortmund. 

‘No reason to doubt integrity of final’ 

Dubai: The ICC on Friday said there is no reason to doubt the integrity of the 2011 World Cup final in which India defeated Sri Lanka, asserting that it has not been provided any evidence that would merit an investigation into the game. The world body's statement came after Sri Lanka Police's special investigation division called off a probe into allegations by former sports minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage that the final was fixed by “certain parties” in Sri Lanka. The police said it found no evidence supporting Aluthgamage's unsubstantiated claims.

British PM rules out return of club cricket  

London: After referring to cricket ball as a natural vector of disease last month, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson believes 'teas' and 'changing rooms' are some of the reasons why club cricket can't return in the country. Pubs and cafes are set to open in the country from July 4 but recreational cricket and club cricket in England haven't recieved permission to go ahead yet.
