180 Jamaat attendees surface in a day after DGP’s warning

Wednesday, 08 April 2020 | PNS | Dehradun

The warning given by the Director General of Police, Anil Raturi to the Tablighi Jamaat followers proved effective as 180 Jamat followers came forward for medical checkups in different parts of the state.

These followers of Jamaat had attended the congregation in Nizamuddin and were hiding in different parts of the state.

The DGP had on Sunday appealed to the Jamaat attendees to come forward and inform about their travel histories.

He had assured them they would be medically examined and would be given necessary medical treatment. Raturi had warned that if they remain hiding and if the police find them after April 6 then action under section 307 of IPC would be taken against them. This section is related with attempt to murder and has 10 years of imprisonment if the charge is proved.

The director general (Law and Order) Ashok Kumar said on Tuesday that 180 Jamaat attendees in the districts of Dehradun, Haridwar, Nainital and Pauri came forward on March 6 after the warning given by the DGP.

He said that on March 7 the police apprehended two Jamaat attendees in Roorkee and Haridwar and as per the warning earlier given, cases under section 307 has been registered against them.

Ashok Kumar further added that the police had apprehended 41 Jamaat attendees between April 1 and 5 who were entering the state clandestinely.

The police have registered cases under section 188 and relevant sections of disaster management act against them. Kumar informed that cases against four persons have been registered for harbouring the Jamat attendees. The police have also registered FIR against 44 people for spreading rumours in the society.
