218 cyclists participate in Monsoon Cyclothon

The Bicycle mayor of Ranchi Kanishka Poddar in association with Round Table India organised a Monsoon Cyclothon Virtual Challenge- 2020 on August 8 and August 9.

The challenge was divided into three levels where participants could either ride for 25 km in level 1, 50 km in level 2 or 100 km in level 3 on any of the two days. The participants could also ride at a time as per their convenience while all the data of the rides was recorded on a mobile application called Strava. A total of 218 cyclists participated in the challenge with 70 in level 1, 83 and 61 cyclists in level 2 and level 3 respectively.

Sumit Tirkey covered 25.72 km in 58 minutes at an average speed of 26.60 km per hour and won level 1. Alisha Singh was the fastest female to complete the same level. Singh covered 25.22 km in 1 jour 18 minutes at an average speed of 19.39 km per hour.

Sagar Patil won level 2 where he covered 51.76 km in 1 hour 54 minutes while Sandeep Kapoor won in the age group of above 50 by riding for 51.81 km in 1 hour 56 minutes. Akansha Bhagat was the fastest female rider in this level who covered 51 km in 2 hours 28 minutes.

Young cyclist Arindam Biswas was declared the fastest man in Ranchi and was titled flying cyclist for his exceptional performance. He completed level 3 by riding for 100.02 km in 3 hours 11 minutes at an average speed of 31.41 km per hour while his maximum speed was 49.38 km per hour.

Raunak Sarda who participated in level 1 covered the maximum distance in the challenge by cycling for 215 km in 10 hours 18 mins at an average speed of 20.88 km per hour.

Many individuals who have started cycling during the lockdown also participated in the event. Sunil Barnwal, senior IAS officer, Government of Jharkhand also took part in level 2 and completed his first half century by riding for 54.33 km in 3 hours. Akash Jalan and Shumbham Saboo also completed their first 100 km by cycling to Hundru waterfall and back. Rai Mahimapat Ray, IAS, Government of Jharkhand participated in level 2 and rode for 50.01 km in 1 hour 57 minutes. It was the third fastest ride in the category and also his first half century. Ray rode all the way to Bundu to complete the challenge.

As many as 113 participants completed the challenge and were awarded a certificate of completion by Poddar. The winner in each category received a trophy from Sunil Barnwal, IAS, Government of Jharkhand, Rajeev Gupta, Curator TEDx Kanke, Shubham Saboo, Chairman Ranchi Utopian Round Table 284 Ranchi and Kanishka Poddar, Bicycle Mayor of Ranchi.

“The Covid- 19 pandemic has resulted in unprecedented bicycle sales in India as more people are trying to avoid public transportation for fear of contracting the virus. The lack of recreational activity and closure of gyms has given a boost to cycling to lead a healthy lifestyle,” said Poddar.

Poddar also informed about an online petition titled #ResetWithCycling which will be handed over to Chief Minister Hemant Soren to take necessary steps in making Ranchi more cycling friendly.
