Monday, 27 July 2020 | Staff Reporter | NEW DELHI

Citing a detailed analysis report on Covid-19 prepared by the Delhi Health Department, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal-led Government claimed 44 per cent decline in deaths between early June and early July.

Lauding the efforts of Government focused on reducing deaths, the Delhi Government said widespread testing, oximeters, responsive ambulance system, ready availability of beds using corona app and addition of ICU beds, are key factors helping to tackle corona pandemic in India’s political capital.

As per Government’s report, both Government and private hospitals have done a fair job in tackling coronavirus. Delhi Government’s Rajiv Gandhi Super Specialty Hospital with seven per cent death rate is on top ranking for giving treatment to corona infected patients.

Analysing the report, Delhi Health Minister Satyendar Jain said, “Chief Minister Kejriwal’s efforts and direct monitoring have rebuilt public confidence in Delhi Government hospitals, which have been at the forefront of this turnaround. The CM has directed the best performing and worst forming hospitals to analyse their system and suggest specific interventions that need to be scaled or changed.”

According to the report, for the period 1-12 June and 1-12 July has revealed a 44 per cent decline in deaths — from 1,089 during 1-12 June to 605 during 1-12 July.

Further, the analysis revealed that deaths in Delhi Government Covid hospitals saw a 58 per cent reduction from early June to July — from 361 deaths to 154 deaths. In comparison, deaths in private Covid hospitals saw a 25 per cent reduction from June to July and deaths in Central Government Covid hospitals saw a 55 per cent reduction.

According to the report on hospital-wise analysis of deaths revealed that death per cent rate in Central Government’s RML hospital was 81 per cent in June, which dropped to 58 per cent in July. In Safdarjung Hospital — another Central Government facility, the death rate dropped from 40 per cent in June to 31 per cent in July.

Similarly, the death rate in LNJP Hospital — Delhi Government’s largest Covid hospital — dropped drastically from 28 per cent in early June to 16 per cent in early July. Delhi Government’s Rajiv Gandhi Super Specialty Hospital turned out to be among the best Covid hospitals in the national capital in terms of death rate — 6 per cent in early June and 7 per cent in early July.

Analysis of death figures carried out by the Health department also revealed that a large number of people who got admitted in early June arrived in critical condition and passed away within four days, many within 24 hours.

Notably, during 1-12 June, percentage of all deaths that took place within four days of admission was 67 per cent, whereas percentage of deaths that took place within 24 hours of admission was 34per cent. In comparison, during 1-12 July, percentage of all deaths that took place within four days of admission was merely 35 percentage whereas percentage of deaths that took place within 24 hours of admission was 15 per cent.

This radical turnaround was possible due to the single-minded focus of Kejriwal on initiatives that would directly help prevent deaths, as well his daily monitoring of status of critical patients.

Jain said, “The Chief Minister has been personally monitoring daily status of critical patients and deaths due to Covid from beginning. His emphasis on timely implementation of crucial initiatives to prevent deaths has helped turnaround the situation and restores public confidence in Delhi Government’s hospitals.”

Analysis of deaths from 1-23 July revealed that the Government hospitals with the highest death rate are Ram Manohar Lohia (39 per cent), Safdarjung (35 per cent), GTB (22 per cent), AIIMS Delhi (20 per cent) and LNJP (15 per cent).

The report also highlighted that the percentage of deaths that took place in wards in these hospitals in the period 1-23 July was 43 per cent in RML, 42 per cent in GTB, 38 per cent in LNJP and 18 per cent in Safdarjung.
