A Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) worker was shot dead by unidentified people near a park in east Delhi's Mandawali area on Wednesday morning.
The victim identified as Rahul Nagar alias Bhuru suffered four gunshot wounds. The police said Nagar was declared a "Bad Character" of Mandawali police station.
According to a senior police official, police were informed about the incident at around 7:30 am. "He was rushed to Max Patparganj hospital where he was declared brought dead. During initial investigation, it was revealed that he was walking near his house in the morning when a group of unidentified men approached him and fired bullets at him," said the senior police official.
"His neighbours and family members came out and found him lying on the floor. The accused escaped on their bikes. Over six bullets were fired at him and Nagar sustained four bullet injuries," he said. "A case of murder has been registered and an investigation has started, he added.
Police said that last year, around November, Nagar was attacked by another group of men, a case of attempt to murder was registered. Nagar has been involved in cases of violence, attempt to murder and criminal intimidation. He contested from Vinod Nagar ward as a National Congress Party candidate supported by the BJP in 2017 MCD polls. He lost the election and later joined BJP, a Delhi BJP leader said.
