Cabinet expansion likely after bypolls

Sunday, 01 November 2020 | PNS | Ranchi

Chief Minister Hemant Soren may carry out his Cabinet expansion after bypoll results. The Chief Minister is likely to induct one MLA in his Cabinet as a Minister’s post was vacated due to untimely death of Haji Hussain Ansari.

Sources said that as Ansari was a JMM legislator from Madhupur  it is all likely that the ministerial berth will go to JMM’s kitty and that too to a minority legislator. JMM general secretary and party spokesperson Supriyo Bhattacharya said, "There is no confusion the ministerial berth vacated by Haji Hussain Ansari will be filled by JMM quota. However, it is the Chief Minister’s prerogative as to who he will induct in his Cabinet."

As Ansari was holding minority affairs department it is likely that a JMM Muslim legislator will be given chance. Sources said that in such a situation, Gandey MLA Sarfaraz Ahmad is the top contender for the seat.

Ahmad once a Congressman had represented the Gandey seat in 2009 and in 2019 months before the Assembly election he had switched sides to JMM as the seat went to JMM’s kitty as per seat sharing arrangement between JMM and Congress.

Though Ahmad is top contender for ministerial berth, there are others too, who are hopeful that being Muslim legislator they may get a chance in Soren Cabinet.

Congress MLA from Jamtara Irfan Ansari too is optimistic that being a member from minority community he will get a chance to become minister holding the key minority affairs department. However, Ansari who had represented the Jamtara seat for two consecutive terms has till now not claimed a ministerial berth.

Sources said that at present  Soren government’s entire focus is on the bye-election in Dumka and Bermo. Both Dumka and Bermo seats are prestigious seats as the ruling party was holding both the seats. The Dumka seat won by Chief Minister Hemant Soren was vacated as he decided to retain the Barhait seat. From Dumka the JMM has fielded Basant Soren, younger brother of Hemant Soren.Fighting against Basant Soren is former minister Louis Marandi as BJP candidate.Bermo too is going to witness a direct contest between Congress Jaimangal Singh and BJP’s Yogeshwar Mahto Batul. Bermo is said to be the old citadel of Congress as Jaimangal Singh's father late Rajendra Prasad Singh had represented the seat eight times.
