UP Congress president Ajay Kumar Lallu along with Youth Congress chief Kanishka Pandey, MLC Deepak Singh, and hundreds of other party workers and leaders were held when they were trying to march towards the Raj Bhawan to gherao it to protest against the new farm laws in the state capital on Monday.
President Ram Nath Kovind on Sunday gave assent to three contentious farm bills passed in Parliament last week that have triggered farmers’ protest.
Reports said that several of party leaders, former MLAs and MPs were also detained on the way to Lucknow to join the protest so they staged demonstrations on highways leading to huge jams on all the highways leading to the state capital.
The leaders also blocked the Kanpur-Lucknow toll plaza, leading to traffic chaos for several hours. MLA Aradhana Mishra `Mona’ and some other leaders, including district president Ved Prakash Tripathi, were put in house arrest.
Earlier, the Lucknow Commissionerate officials had sealed the borders to prevent the Congressmen from protesting against the farm laws.
A heavy police force was stationed outside the Raj Bhawan since Monday morning. Additional police forces including four companies of PAC were also deployed.
Led by the UPCC president, the Congress workers from all over the state converged on the Parivartan Chowk and staged a protest against the “anti-farm” laws, party’s administrative head, Siddharth Priya Srivastava claimed.
