Coronavirus chain breaks for a day in Jharkhand

Wednesday, 08 April 2020 | PNS | Ranchi

After fresh cases of COVID-19 reported on two consecutive days in Jharkhand, the chain broke on Tuesday. While the number of coronavirus patients reached 5000 in India on Tuesday, the number of cases in Jharkhand remained stable at four.

The Government by Tuesday collected samples of 1111 coronavirus suspects, and 957 of them tested negative, a report released by the National Health Mission (NHM) on Tuesday said. The lab test reports of at least 150 suspects are awaited, it added.

Out of the 2046 travelers under surveillance in Jharkhand, 447 completed their observation period of 28 days and did not complain of any symptoms, officials from NHM said. Around 1.3 lakh people have been put in home quarantine here, and more than 15000 have been sent to quarantine centres of the Government.

Meanwhile, a State Minister's son who was tested last week for Coronavirus tested negative, Deoghar Deputy Commissioner Nancy Sahay said. The man was apprehended along with seven of his aides after his links with Tablighi Jamaat surfaced. "He has tested negative. We are still investigating if he attended the Tablighi Jamaat congregation in Delhi," said Sahay.

By now, four cases of COVID-19 have been reported in Jharkhand – two from Ranchi, and one each from Hazaribagh and Bokaro.

Out of the four patients, only two had travel history to foreign countries. All the four patients are undergoing treatment in Government hospitals and none of them have recovered so far, health officials said.

Despite a delayed entry in Jharkhand, the virus has already infected people living in rural areas – a cause for concern for the Government. The number of cases here quadrupled in a fortnight, and many people who might be infected have not even been tested, said a source from the health department.

Meanwhile, the Government is not only combating the virus, but also attempts by locals to keep their history of contact with patients a secret, a senior health official has said. Rumours about poor treatment meted out to suspects in Isolation Centres have made many locals resist screening and sample collection, he added.

The Government has over 40,000 beds in quarantine centres and nearly 3000 beds in Isolation Centres across Jharkhand. The Government has placed orders for 300 ventilators in order to tackle cases if there is an outbreak in Jharkhand, officials said. At present, the Government has around 230 ventilators, they added.
