Coronavirus crisis makes political parties tech savvy

Tuesday, 19 May 2020 | PNS | Lucknow

The coronavirus pandemic has brought about a change in the working of political parties – it has made them computer savvy and taught them how to control party activities digitally.

All political parties are now heavily relying on mobile phones, social networking sites and video-conferencing apps to stay afloat in this crisis where every party is making desperate attempt to remain connected with the people.

“We are using technology to stay connected with the people. We are carrying out charity work and we have asked party workers to put up the pictures on the WhatsApp groups or other social networking sites,” former chief minister and national president of Samajwadi Party, Akhilesh Yadav, said.

Akhilesh said the SP did not mind party workers putting up their pictures doing charity. “This act of their invigorates others to do better,” he said.

Devendra Pratap Singh, a senior Congress leader, says you can see the FB page how Congress volunteers are helping the migrant workers.

“The Congress is giving food packets, fruits and even laiya chana (puffed rice and roasted grams) to the migrant workers who can be seen travelling in trucks packed like sardines,” he said.

Bharatiya Janata Party has, however, taken a lead. It has held several rounds of talks with the ground-level workers through video-conferencing apps.

BJP general secretary Vijay Bahadur Pathak  said that the on-line meetings with the sector- level leaders commenced from Monday. He said the party had held on-line meetings with over 1.60 lakh booth-level workers and would connect with at least two leaders of the 27,000 sectors.

Pathak said that during the meeting, the leadership asked about the present scenario of their area and appealed to the workers to serve the people during this pandemic.

He said leaders also asked the sector-level leaders to closely monitor the activities of the migrant workers who were in home quarantine .
