Covid death toll jumps to 20

Tuesday, 07 July 2020 | PNS | Ranchi

The Covid death toll in Jharkhand jumped from 15 to 20 in the past three days, with the latest in a series of Covid deaths reported from Dhanbad on Monday, health officials said.

A 55-year-old woman from the coal capital of the country died of Covid-19 infection on Monday and was cremated in the cemetery of Wasseypur bypass under supervision of the district administration, officials said.

As many as 39 fresh cases of Covid-19 infection surfaced from various districts in Jharkhand on Monday, taking the total count of Covid cases in State to 2854, a bulletin, released by the National Health Mission (NHM) on Monday evening, stated.

The trajectory of Covid recoveries also witnessed an upward trend on Monday as 23 infected patients recovered and were subsequently discharged from hospital, the bulletin said.

The count of migrants testing positive for Covid-19 infection has also been on the rise in the State. Out of the 2854 cases of infection, 2109 were migrants, NHM officials said.

All the Covid victims in State either suffered from some or the other comorbid condition or age related ailments, officials said. The youngest victim of the virus in Jharkhand was a 24-year-old woman from Giridih. The woman, officials said, suffered from postpartum sepsis.

The Government has so far collected samples of 1.62 lakh suspects and tested 1.59 lakh of them. Around 2.8 lakh people have been put in home quarantine across Jharkhand and around 45,000 have been sent to institutional quarantine, officials said.

The Covid recovery rate in Jharkhand also improved on Monday, health officials said. The recovery rate rose to 72.46 per cent, against the national average of 60.86 per cent. The Covid mortality rate also increased on Monday. It jumped from 0.67 per cent to 0.70 per cent, NHM officials said.

The first Covid-19 case of State was reported from Hindpiri on March 31. A Malaysian woman, who had attended the Tablighi Jamaat congregation in New Delhi, became the first Covid patient here. Soon, a flurry of cases in Hindpiri haunted the Government, and the locality was sealed.

However, the cases have now reduced considerably in the locality and it is not a containment zone anymore, officials said. A second wave of Covid-19 cases hit Jharkhand with the return of migrant workers. At least five lakh migrants returned to the state since the imposition of lockdown, and more than 2000 of them tested positive for Covid-19, officials said.
