Cyber crime police arrested a 26-year-old Balaghat based youth who was involved in cheating victims luring of cashbacks on e-wallets; three persons were duped to the tune of Rs 41000.
The accused identified as Sonu Dhake was nabbed by cyber cell Bhopal who duped the victims Pankaj Rai of Kolar, Sandhya Ahirwar of Nehru Nagar and Abhishek Jha of Ambedkar Nagar.
After the three clicked on the link for cashback they amount of Rs 14000, Rs 14000 and Rs 3000 was deducted from their Phonepay e-wallet accounts. The money was later transferred to Paytm by the accused and withdrawn using ATM card.
Based on the complaint police registered a case of fraud and tracked the accused.
During interrogation, the accused confessed crime.
The modus operandi of the accused to call the victims and in case if victim would have application Phonepay he would continue otherwise he would disconnect.
The victims with Phonepay would be lured of cashback and were asked to download link and as soon as pin was entered the amount would be transferred to accused which he would later withdrew from ATM.
The accused would send cashback link request to the victims. The three victims are been cheated lodged complaint with the cyber cell Bhopal police.
Accused work as driver and details of how he obtained the details of cheating through sending links would be investigated.
At present three victims have been found and it is likely that other victims who have been targeted by the accused would surface and report. Police have recovered mobile phone and SIM card used in the fraud.
