DGP seeks people’s help in checking illicit liquor sale

Monday, 06 July 2020 | PNS | DALTONGANJ

DGP Jharkhand MV Rao has sought people’s help in police drive against illicit liquor and gambling.

In a tweet on July 4, Rao has asked common people to keep the police informed about illicit liquor and gambling by any mode of communication. Commoners, he said, could dial 100, call police officials on their numbers, tweet, send SMS or WhatsApp message.

DGP said details of the informer are ‘not required’. The DGP’s tweet has swung SPs of the 24 districts into action.

Palamu’s  Kalyanpur and parts of Harihurganj are infamous for illicit manufacturing of liquor. Harihurganj is just 50 yards away from Bihar and hence residents of Bihar do cross over here for a pint of drink.

Zonal IG of police Navin Kumar Singh said “Liquor plays a major role in crime. A large number of other petty crimes are committed under its influence. A curb on it will help maintain better law and order in the state.”

Reminded that manufacturing desi brew is like a cottage industry in Jharkhand Singh said “Police are trying to identify big umbrellas of this illicit liquor. These big networkers will be put under the thumbs of law.”

The IG reiterated there are Mafiosi of illicit liquor and these are to be tamed with law.

DGP’s tweet on illicit liquor and gambling, said sources, carries significance as the neighbouring state Bihar has put in place prohibition. Bihar assembly election is due in November-December this year and the spate of manufacturing of illicit liquor in Jharkhand which has a tremendous porous border with Bihar may further speed up its surreptitious pushing in of cartel of liquor there in Bihar.

Police sources said gambling menace is more where there is colliery or stone quarrying and this too has to be crushed.

Sources said there are more than three dozen stone quarrying centres where police vigil for gambling has been stepped up. SP Palamu Ajay Linda said following the tweet of DGP instructions have been given to police stations in this district to thwart any large scale manufacturing of illicit brew.

Linda said the illicit brew manufacturers choose some locations deep in the jungles where availability of water is assured but poor families do not mind fermenting and distilling liquor from ripe fruits of Mahua right inside their huts.

Linda said it is these poor families who get noticed more than those who carry out illegal distillery work in the jungles.
