Digvijaya reaffirms faith in Rahul, Priyanka

Sunday, 12 July 2020 | Staff Reporter | Bhopal

Senior Congress leader and Rajya Sabha MP Digvijay Singh here on Saturday demanded that former party president Rahul Gandhi should return to take over the mantle of the grand old party yet again to fight Bharatiya Janata Party.

He also backed AICC general secretary in charge of UP, Priyanka Gandhi to take the fight to opposition in Uttar Pradesh which according to him slipped under Jungle Raaj since the Congress party was dislodged from power.

“The whole Congress party young and old everyone stands behind you and are ready to make whatever sacrifice you demand. So Rahul ji please lead,” said the veteran Congressman who was once also dubbed as the political mentor of Rahul Gandhi who stepped down after his party’s dismal show in 2019 general elections.

Singh fired a series of tweets on Saturday on the matter while responding to a media report which claimed that the Congress party is hearing voiced of dissent from within especially against Rahul-Priyanka’s aggressive stance against Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

The report blamed ‘Old Guards’ of the party to have been opposing Rahul-Priyanka for their excessive aggressive stance on PM Narendra Modi and also want them surrender the political space they occupy within the party.

Besides, it is also widely believed that Rahul Gandhi had quit the top post in the party after 2019 debacle in disgust as he wanted Old Guards to take responsibility and most of them did not oblige.

After he left, there were talks of Old Guards shelved by Rahuil Gandhi had made an effective comeback in the party under AICC president Sonia Gandhi. "I personally support the aggressive stand which Rahulji and Priyanka ji are taking on issue of national interest in India and UP.

Why don’t who appreciate this leave the party," he added, underlining the fact that none was opposed to Rahul Gandhi within the Congress party and it was all an imagination of the media.

There are speculations that Gandhi could make a comeback to lead the party soon.

However, Singh who had once dubbed as Gandhi’s political mentor, was all praises for his leadership skills. “He had virtually emerged as main challenger to Modi in 2019 and should have continued to build the party either as AICC president or as Leader of Congress Parliamentary Party in Lok Sbaha. Why did he voluntarily withdraw from the scene,” Singh questioned the decision of Rahul Gandhi of quitting as the AICC president after LS polls defeat in 2019.

It’s no secret that Congress party has gone from bad to worse since Rahul Gandhi left and party young guns are apparently feeling left out which was vindicated with the departure of Jyotiraditya Scindia who was seen as one of the leaders from Gandhi’s close group.

However, the Rajya Sabha MP called for an urgent need to revive the party organisation right from booth level to All India Congress Committee.

At the same time Congress leadership must take up the challenge of building the party organisation brick by brick. “This is where we need dynamism of Rahul ji and Priyanka ji. I am sure both of them have the guts and courage to take Modi-Shah,” said the ‘Raja of Raghogarh’.
