Dist Admin seeks dry ration kits instead of cooked food

Thursday, 09 April 2020 | PNS | Dehradun

Considering the increasing demand for dry ration in Dehradun among those in need during the lockdown, the district administration has appealed citizens to donate dry ration kits instead of cooked food packets.

Hundreds of individuals and several organisations have come forward to support the district administration in providing meals to the destitute, daily wagers, students and senior citizens among others who are unable to secure regular meals during the lockdown. The administration has provided thousands of cooked food packets besides hundreds of dry ration kits. So far, the requirement of cooked food packets has always been more than dry ration kits in the city during the lockdown. However, in the last few days, the demand for dry ration kits (Annapurna kits) is more than the cooked food packets. On Monday, the district administration distributed 415 dry ration kits besides 7,150 cooked food packets. On Tuesday the administration distributed 1,151 dry ration kits which was more than twice the number of dry ration kits the previous day. However, the number of dry ration kits distributed on Wednesday was only 671. Informing about the rise in the demand for dry ration kits, Dehradun Chief Development Officer (CDO) Nikita Khandelwal said, "The requirement of food packets and ration keeps fluctuating but in the last few days, the demand for dry ration is more. Those people who were provided dry ration in the initial days of lockdown have finished their supplies, so we have provided them more ration. The other reason is that some people have also begun to cook their own food, so they demand just raw ingredients to cook their meals." The ration kits provided by the administration generally last up to five to seven days or more depending on the number of people in a family, said Khandelwal.

The donation of dry ration kits has also increased through the online Doon Happy Meals initiative of Dehradun district administration. Talking about this, Khandelwal said, "Due to the decline in the demand for cooked food packets, we are requesting people who approach us to donate dry ration kits instead of cooked food packets, if possible. We do not want to waste the efforts and assistance of so many people in providing cooked food when there is not enough requirement for it."

However, Khandelwal added that the situation might be different in Dehradun if the period of lockdown is extended in the state for more weeks. "We might need more cooked food packets besides dry ration kits in case the lockdown gets extended but presently we prefer the dry ration over cooked food," added the CDO.
