The Chhattisgarh government on Wednesday said that there was no better choice than the Medical College and Hospital (MECAHARA), Raipur, is made into a dedicated hospital to treat Covid-19 patients in the state.
Justifying the decision of earmarking the MECAHARA as a dedicated centre for the treatment of Covid-19 patients in the state, official sources said specialist doctors, trained staff, adequate numbers of beds and facility of an ICU had forced the government to decide in making it the state- level Covid-19 hospital.
The MEKAHARA is the only state-run hospital, which has a 500-bed multi-specialty unit and a 100-bed Intensive Care Unit (ICU), an official said.
“It would only be possible in the hospital to cure the contagious disease at an affordable price compared to other alternatives, including the option of taking over a private-run hospital,” the official added.
According to experts, it could also not be ruled out that in case of such an eventuality, 10% to 15% of the patients would have to be admitted in the ICU.
“This could have done only in MECAHARA as no other hospital in the state can accommodate such a number.”
About the departments which have been shifted to the other hospitals, the official said that the units have been shifted to healthcare facilities that are in the same vicinity, so that patients are not inconvenienced in reaching there.
