nA special revision of the electoral roll ahead of elections to urban bodies in Chhattisgarh has been postponed due to the spread of the Covid-19 pandemic, State Election Commissioner Thakur Ram Singh said on Friday.
He said in a statement that the decision was taken on the request of District Collectors.
The Commission had issued notification for revision of electoral roll on July 21. The primary publication of the electoral roll was to be done on September 9 and claims, objections and corrections were to be invited from September 18.
Elections are due to a total of 10 urban bodies in eight districts: Durg, Bemetara, Raipur, Korea, Sukma, Bijapur, Kanker and Surajpur.
These include the Municipal Corporation of Bhilai, Risali and Birgaon, Municipal Council of Shivpurcharcha, and Nagar Panchayat Maro, Konta, Bhairamgarh, Bhopalpatnam, Narharpur and Prem Nagar.
A by-election is also due in Nagar Panchayat Magarload ward Number 11 in Dhamtari district.
Thakur Ram said the primary publication of the electoral roll was done everywhere except in Durg, which has been hit seriously by Covid-19.
The Deputy District Election Officers of Bemetara, Korea, Raipur, Sukma, Bijapur, Surajpur, Kanker and Dhamtari have also urged postponement of the electoral roll review process in view of the coronavirus.
Thakur Ram said that considering the prevailing conditions, the complete schedule of electoral roll revision has been suspended.
